Your Utah Winter Coop Checklist
Before the first big snowstorm, give your coop a quick inspection.
Winter preparation starts with keeping the flock’s home dry, protected, and supplied with fresh air.
🏠 Check for leaks
Look at the roof, windows, and doors. Fix places where rain or melting snow can soak the bedding.
🌬️ Keep ventilation open
Sealing every opening can trap moisture and ammonia. Maintain ventilation while preventing cold drafts from blowing directly onto roosting birds.
🧹 Start with dry bedding
Remove wet or heavily soiled material, and keep checking through winter. Moisture management is an ongoing job.
💧 Make a water plan
Chickens need access to liquid water, even on freezing days. If you use heated equipment, follow its installation instructions and keep electrical components protected.
🔒 Inspect doors and barriers
Check latches, screens, and gaps so weather protection doesn’t come at the expense of predator security.
A little preparation now can make daily winter chores much easier.
